My Quiet Christmas

The Holiday season is usually quiet at our house. Maybe because there are only four of us, no nieces, no grandparents, no titas and titos who come around to visit. We have a small family. My mom is the only child. My father though have four other siblings but they do not usually come around Christmas. Our noche buena and media noche just includes us four. Its ok, I mean that how its been since I was small. But this Christmas was extra quiet at our house.

December 24 is my sister's birthday. For the past how many years our house would usually be swamped with all her highschool friends during this day to celebrate her birthday. That did not happen though this year, she said she is too old for that already.

But of course that did not stop us from cooking our favorite holiday fiesta! We had spaghetti, relenong bangus, mechado, ham, potato salad, graham cake, queso de bola, castanas, different fruits, halaya, cakes and so many different chocolates. Makes me wonder how four mouths can accomodate that much food!

The new year is another story. We were very excited with this one fireworks we bought... my mom bought it from one of her friends who vouched that it would be spectacular. Then we bought different fountains from one of our neighbors who also vouched that the fountains would really work. Hehehe come 11pm eve as we near 12, we started lighting up the fountains. One by one the fountains lighted up and then after like 5 seconds, die down. All eight of the fountains die down after like 5 seconds! My mom was furious!! And the fireworks we were so excited about... it didn't even light up. Hehehe there goes atleast a thousand bucks!

As I look back to this last christmas I come to realize that as we grow older our responsibilities get in the way of actually enjoying the holidays. I had to work until the 23rd and the 31st just to finish our year-end close. I was stressed the whole holiday season. Plus i was also stressing about the gifts to give to my friends... I didn't complete my gift shopping until the 24th!

I tried to enjoy every minute of this christmas season, and even though it was quiet and it was just the four of us, it was worthwhile. I loved my parents and my sister. That was all that matters.
